The
winter of 2023-2024 was a mild one, with only two weeks of real cold
with frost in the morning and a strong Mistral (north wind). Late winter and early spring saw cold nights and mornings, followed by milder temperatures in the afternoons. Winter and spring were particularly wet. Fortunately, there was no climatic catastrophe. The rains were regular and of low intensity, but they lasted a long time, helping to recharge the water tables. Vine growth got off to a late start due to the cool temperatures. On April 19, 20 and 21, we had three nights when frost was feared. Vegetation was underdeveloped, and above all the Mistral wind was blowing day and night, stirring the atmosphere and preventing the temperature from dropping too low. So, fortunately, we had no frost damage. The grapes came out normally, without excess. The cool weather lasted until early June. Rain fell intermittently in spring. This favored the development of disease, particularly mildew, but was not a serious problem. Above all, they will help to feed the vegetation this summer. Flowering began at the end of May, much like last year. There was some light rain on these dates. The temperature was still cool in the morning. These particular conditions led to some coulure on Grenache. Other grape varieties, less susceptible to coulure, were not affected. Summer was fairly hot and windy (Mistral). A few light showers enabled the very young vines to cope well with the summer. The soils, well supplied with water by the spring rains, enabled the vineyards to get through the hot period without any particular problems. August was particularly hot and dry. Harvesting began on August 27 at Domaine de l'Amauve with red grapes for our rosé wines (“Le Rosé de Simone” and “Le Rosé d'Yvonne”). Then the first white grapes were harvested (Grenache blanc and Viognier). This year, the Ugni-Blanc grapes will be harvested earlier than usual. Their production is low due to more limited bunch emergence. As a result, ripening is exceptionally rapid. The Clairettes will be harvested as usual around September 15. The first red grapes for the red wine cuvées are harvested from September 3 (Syrah), then from September 7 for Grenache. Ripeness is perfect. Natural acidity is always present. Sugar content is not excessive. Heavy rains fell at the beginning of September. Due to the long dry period that preceded them, they had no negative impact on the harvest or on the work. The grass-covered rows in the vineyard allowed the tractor and pickers to pass through on dry ground. After the rains, the temperature dropped and the rest of the harvest took place in a cooler atmosphere, which also enabled the grapes to be picked at the right temperature all day long. Vinification went smoothly. The whites and rosés fermented quietly at low temperature. The reds were left to macerate for a long time to allow the lovely tannins and color in their skins to dissolve. The wines of this new vintage are remarkable for several reasons: - The quantity of grapes is limited due to the smaller number of bunches produced, coulure during flowering (Grenache), and the summer drought. - This limited production led to superb concentration of the grapes, which produced wines of remarkable freshness for the harvest as a whole, and structure for the reds. The red grapes have reached a high level of skin and seed maturity. As a result, the red wines have exceptionally fine tannins. | |
