The winter 2019-2020 was cold and windy until the end of February. From October 2019 to the end of March 2020, 550 mm of rain was recorded, which will allow a good water supply to the vineyard during the next summer. From the end of February, the temperature was milder. The budbreak of the vine was very early due to these mild temperatures. There was a high risk of spring frost. One night of frost was to be deplored in the region. The frost affected some vineyards sheltered from the wind. Luckily, the Mistral wind was blowing in our area and protected us from the frost. The vine vegetation developed normally from the end of March. Grapes were coming out normally. We have got a few spring rains. Vine diseases were limited by the Mistral wind which was blewing as soon as the rain was over. From mid-June, a long period of drought set in. It will last until the end of August. The vine was well fed by the winter rains. The vineyard did not suffer too much from the drought. Only the young vines, have suffered a bit from this drought because their roots are not going deep enough for finding water. The mild spring allowed an advance in vegetation that was estimated at 8-10 days compared to 2019. The flowering starts on May 18 in Séguret. That is to say 5 to 6 days ahead of 2019. The summer of 2020 was normally hot, very dry, but also very windy (with a lot of Mistral wind). The harvest was planned to be quite early. Indeed, at Domaine de l'Amauve, I started harvesting on August 19, two days earlier than the earliest year on record (which was 2017). The quality of the grapes was perfect. The dryness of the summer concentrated sugars and acids. Ph levels were excellent. When tasting the grapes, the fruitiness is very present, with no vegetal taste. The tannins are soft and the seeds are already ripe. Until the end of August, the heat of the day forced us to harvest only in the morning. From the beginning of September, the heat decreased and it was possible to harvest throughout the day. Fermentations have been without any problem. We are now at the end of the fermentation and maceration. The white and rosé wines are fresh and aromatic. And the red wines have a deep colour with a nice tannic charge on fine tannins and a beautiful aromatic expression. For all these reasons, 2020 is a very nice vintage. With this vintage, the wines of Domaine de l’Amauve get the organic certification.
